In summer it's ideal for quiet walks, cycling, canoeing and boating, and in winter you can do any sport from tobogganing on the Forststrasse to cross country skiing on the cross country track (30 m away from the house). You can drive straight up to the house in your car to park outside. In front of the house on the south side there is a meadow ideal for a playground when mown. There's also an outdoor fireplace for camp fires and a barbecue for grilling sausages. The Schafreiter, a mountain with a long panoramic view of the Alps, is close by, and is worth climbing (on the walkways). Notes
In a self catering house you need to cook, a really good group activity. Nothing beats sitting at the table waiting for pancakes. Furnishing is simple, Living rooms are large rooms with corner benches, while the kitchen is nicely fitted with cupboards. The whole house is very spacious so that you can even store sports and hiking gear in the hallway. On each floor there's a fridge, and a freezer in the cellar. The cellar is cool enough, even in summer for food storage. The house can be divided into two separate parts. Even the entrances can be used quite separately. All rooms contain electric light, central heating and windows. Wood smoke makes you feel at home.
This is a no smoking house. All rooms have bunk beds. The wooden house is spacious enough for several families. There is firewood available but we expect guests to chop wood, wear indoor shoes throughout the house and keep the huts clean. Please don't hide breakages, report them. The next group will be grateful.
Vorderriss and well-known personalities
King Ludwig II of Bavaria often came to Vorderriss. In 1866 he built a chapel in honour of Queen Maria. Prince Regent Luitpold came here every year to hunt chamois deer. Ludwig Thom, our most famous Bavarian writer and son of the senior forester Max Thoma, spent his first six years here. This is the place where several hunt and poacher tales took place; Ganghofer's film of 'The Hunter of Fall' was filmed nearby. The ancient village of Fall was drowned when the Stausee was dammed. It is said that when the water level is low and there's a full moon you can hear the bells of the old village church.
Connoiseurs call this district Bavarian Columbia
Bavarian Columbia is the name given by connoisseurs to this district around Isar and Rissbach because it looks like British Columbia. If you like wandering beside the river looking for rare stones, this is your paradise. You can even find ammonites from the ancient sea! In past centuries people kept trawling for gold in the Isar. Standing in water is exhausting, but maybe there's still some of it around today.
In Wallgau community, easy to reach from the wooden house via a toll road through the upper Isar valley, there's an exclusive golf course with restaurant.
Ski information
The wooden house is well situated for cross country having a full-length, well-maintained track to Fall and Wallgau, Hinterriss and Lenggries. The full length of the track is over 80 km. All kinds of ski pistes in Lenggries, 15 km from the wooden house (e.g. Brauneck). Tobogganing close by the house. Snow hiking with and without skis in unspoilt landscape around the Sylvenstein as far as Hinterriss and the acorn woods. Hiking on Rissbach and the upper Isar, where you can also try your hand at gold washing.
