Climate and environment
From mid-March there’s a choice of weather: on flat ground midday temperatures can reach about 250C, while you can still ski in the mountains. At cherry harvest time in mid May, 300C and breakfast on the terrace are not unusual. From about mid June to mid August the temperature is about 36 – 380C. Rain is rare. From Mid August to the start of October the temperature sinks slowly to 22 0 25 degrees. November is usually very fine, with temperatures of about 10 degrees in December. The rivers are very clean and just right for bathing. In the Le Vigan direction lie the mountains, of which the tallest is Mont Aigual at over 1500 m. There the Atlantic and Mediterranean streams meet in the sea. You’ll find numerous walking paths and climbing tours are also available. During the whole of October till mid November there’s a lovely autumnal atmosphere with pleasant temperatures. Chestnut harvest (you are allowed to collect them), autumn markets and autumn festivals.
Culture
Montpellier and Nimes have lots of music and theatre festivals. Sumène itself is for three days in the summer the centre of the Trans Cevennol, an international music festival. 1 of the central parts of the ‘Contes’ or recitals was founded in Sumène, where countless poets and philosophers, famous far beyond the borders of France, spend the whole year giving lectures, seminars and presentations. Numerous wine and town festivals with children’s decorations, fireworks, musical bands, bowls and lots more. Fantastic restaurants nearby: in Ganges ‘Le Commerce’, in Sumène ‘Le Cokadoo’. Lots of grottoes in the region and also the bamboo woods in the direction of Arles, near Anduze. Lovely market in autumn as well as harvest festivals. The Knights Templars castle in La Couvertoirade is worth a visit, as is the rock circle in Cirque du Narvacelle. In Lodeve, about 80 km away, visit St Fulgran cathedral, and not far from there the Lac du Salagou and the two beautiful villages of Octon and Salasc.
You can play golf in Montpellier as well. Find all the details in the tourist office in Salagou, where German languages information is available.
Ski information
At about 60 km from the house skiing, cross country and tobogganing is available from December to the middle of March at Mont Agoual ski resort. Ski lifts are available and it takes an hour to reach it. At the height of the season the snow is about 1.2 metres high.
